This is a photo of my workplace.
I am a teacher forTAFE New England. I work at the Armidale campus, located in the New England region of NSW, Australia.
The space you are seeing in this picture is both a class room and a simulated children's service.
We have classes for students who study in a variety of ways including; internal students, who recieve face to face classes. External students, who have both face to face and self paced learning. Trainees, who are recieving training in the workplace, whilst being supported by face to face and self paced learning. Commercial Training, where students may have completed their formal study, however wish to attend special workshops to remain current in their practices.
Many of our students are located in remote areas, which means lots of planning and flexibility for teachers, students and industry.
During the week we offer a simulated service, where families bring their children and students will observe and plan for them as they would in the workplace. I will explore this more in later posts, but I feel very proud of this aspect of our teaching. It gives the students, some with little or no experience, an opprotunity to interact and practice their skills as early childhood educators, in a safe learning environment..
I look forward to sharing with you my role as an educator in the early childhood industry, and in turn, learning more about the fascinating things that are being done in other corners of the globe.
Ann

Your photo reminds me about the upcoming summer in the Southern hemisphere! Here it's autumn and the most colorful season of them all. I look forward to learn about your workplace and how the students practice their skills in education!
ReplyDeleteIt's very nice that students are able to see "real life" while they're studying. Love this idea, that parent's could leave their kids for few hours with students. We don't have that kind of service here, but I'm sure it would be popular. And school/classes could make some money.
ReplyDeleteAnn, how wonderful that your students have access to this service! It must make it easier for you to do your assessments as well! Our Polytechnic (previously TAFE) runs a playgroup from one of our campuses and has simulated environments at the other. We find this a great way to give students that 'real life' experience while still having the support and mentoring of lecturers.
ReplyDeleteHow many years do you study to become a teacher in Australia? Being a teacher in Swedish preschools requires 3,5 years full-time studies (to get a degree as preschool-teacher). Would also like to find out if you need a license to teach in your schools and preschools?
ReplyDeleteIn Australia there are many levels of study to work in early childhood. The minimum qualification is a certificate III, this is 6 months. A Diploma, 2 years. A Bachelor Degree, 3 years. These are all based on full time study. Workers also have to have a working with children and police record check.
ReplyDeleteI have a Bachelor Degree and to teach at TAFE I also have a Certificate IV in training and assessing.
Ann, what a fantastic opportunity... I am jealous. Looking forward to hearing more.
